TRAININGS/CERTIFICATIONS
Region 6 Public Health Leadership Institute for Emerging
Leaders 2023 Alumni. The purpose of R6-PHLI is to develop the next
generation of leaders in public health by providing an opportunity for
strategic professional growth for those interested in refining their leadership
skills and advancing their career to the next level. The R6-PHLI focuses on
mid-management emerging leaders and is not intended for senior executives.
R6-PHLI is designed to create a learning community that explores timely
leadership topics and builds core skills. The sessions use interactive
discussions with leaders in the field and are reinforced through practice
activities. The curriculum was developed using focus groups and key informant
interviews with professionals across the five states of Region 6 to identify
current issues and the leadership skills needed in practice today.
Mental Health First Aid-Adult Certification. Mental Health First Aid for Adults teaches people how to
recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18
and older, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person
toward appropriate care if necessary.
Coming Together for Racial Understanding. Coming Together for Racial
Understanding is a dialogue-to-change process for communities seeking new
pathways for working together across racial/ethnic lines that seek to foster
understanding and build trust to make informed collective action for meaningful
change, unlike required Diversity Equity and Inclusion training alone which seldom seeks to develop
trusting relationships among participants.
Leadership Development Certification. The Leadership
Development certificate with South Central Public Health Leadership Institute.
This training enhances and develops leadership skills
through education and individual change and growth while stressing the
application of core functions to public health issues, and translation of
leadership skills into tools for community empowerment. Training focused on affecting individual growth and change; developing leadership skills; application of leadership skills and
techniques in public health practice; techniques to Improve organizational
effectiveness, efficiency, and equity; building collaborative partnerships to
generate healthy communities; development of the skills to create online
learning environments conducive to program outcomes.
Advanced Management Training Certification. Training to
deepen leadership and management abilities, increase personal achievement, and
make a positive and lasting impact on people. Understand how to transform
leadership style for the current business climate; discover powerful solutions
for common management challenges; communicate and persuade effectively in the
age of digital; create a win-win negotiation that promotes a long-term relationship; maximize productivity and handle
time constraints; understand management issues from a macroeconomic
perspective.
ServSafe Certification. Training to
assist with understanding food safety in particular with food preparation
activities as part of supervision of nutrition education paraprofessionals
providing food focused educational opportunities across the state.
SPAN-Et Training. School Physical Activity
and Nutrition Environment (SPAN-Et) provides an opportunity to access and
highlight strengths in schools and provides recommendations on additional means
of improving the School Physical Activity and Nutrition Environment.
Windshield Audit training. Windshield Audit
provides a follow-up assessment to HEAL MAPP training. Through driving around a
community and reassessing the food resources, the windshield audit builds on HEAL MAPP training focusing on where
we live as a large impact on our ability to provide children access to healthy
foods and opportunities to be active. Environmental features, such as community
design, can support or hinder our ability to provide healthful foods and
physical activity opportunities that impact children’s health.
Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice Course. Completion of learning modules was completed and certification in this training was earned. This online certificate course by Cornell University provides course modules, resources and tools on how to collaborate within communities to focus on implementing policy, system and environmental changes to improve obesity and nutrition health efforts.
Faithful Families: Eating Smart, Moving More, Trainer. Faith-based
partnerships for implementation and sustain community-level changes providing
long-term impact. Faithful Families Eating Smart and Moving More is a
practice-tested health promotion intervention that promotes healthy eating and
physical activity in communities of faith. Faithful Families facilitators work
with each faith community to help them adopt environmental support for healthy
eating and physical activity. Training is provided to Lay leaders from the
faith community to bring spiritual elements, through discussion questions and
activity prompts, while Extension leaders provide nutrition and physical
activity education components.
Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy Training. Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy is a comprehensive, community-based program that allows communities to improve access to healthy, affordable foods by working with a small food retailer. Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy will guide any community through a unique approach to increasing access to healthy foods that involves engaging small food retailers and community members and thus addressing supply and demand at the same time.
Traditional Native American Games Instructor Training,
Level I Certification. Provided in partnership with the International
Traditional Games Society and SDSU Extension Service. Certification for teaching
traditional Native games include: The recommended procedures for recovering and
restoring traditional games, including learning about each game's cultural
significance and making the handcrafted game pieces to each game. Connections
with advisors, teachers, and coaches who use the games as tools to educate
modern youth and adults. Certification and permission to teach the many tribal
games that have come into the traditional games' blanket with permission for
all people to play. Knowledge that will enhance goals for: healthy lifestyles,
family fun and humor, increased connections with values of the past, developing
social skills, and building spiritual connections
Difference is Dialogue Program provided by the
South Dakota State University Office of Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and
Access. The Difference is Dialogue consists of face-to-face
meetings of people from different social identity groups that have a history of
conflict or potential conflict. Designed to offer an open and inclusive space
where participants can honestly
confront and discuss issues to foster a deeper understanding of diversity and
social justice.
Intergroup
dialogue provides a safe space for individuals to discuss difficult,
controversial, and even taboo topics that many people think about daily but do
not have a structure from which to discuss these issues in depth. Participants
reflect on relevant issues, work with differences and conflicts, and identify
socially just actions they can take individually and in alliance with others.
Smarter Lunchrooms training. The Smarter
Lunchrooms Movement provides schools with the knowledge, motivation, and
resources needed to build a lunchroom environment that makes healthy food
choices the easy choice. The Movement brings evidence from the fields of
economics, marketing, and psychology into the school cafeteria. Smarter
Lunchrooms strategies are free or low-cost solutions that nudge students to
voluntarily select the healthiest food in the lunchroom. Smarter Lunchrooms can
see less waste, higher participation, more satisfied students, and increased
consumption of important nutrient-rich foods.
Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor Certification to implement the
nation’s largest in-school health and wellness program, created by the National
Dairy Council and National Football League in collaboration with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture. This free program offers funding opportunities for
schools and an online Playbook full of school-tested action strategies to
improve healthy eating and physical activity at schools and beyond.

wellness program, created by the National Dairy Council and National Football
League in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This free
